Arroyo Burro

Dogs flip and curve and overlap as they play together on the beach. But on the ground glass of my viewfinder they are just tiny specks. I move closer. The swirling activity must be a mirage. They disappear before I arrive. I give up and sit down on a log. I use my digital camera to zoom in.

An early lesson in photography was about the surreal nature of dog pictures. With the glut of dog and cat photos out there, you’d think that it would be hard to make anything interesting. But there is something in the random but graceful movements of dogs that often leads to wacky, weird and disturbing images.
